Strategies to Stay on Track This Holiday Season
The holidays bring family and friends together, often with plenty of food and drinks. We don't always have control over what's served, and it's easy to overindulge. Here are simple strategies to help you keep the healthy habits you've built, without the anxiety.
- Stick to your morning routine. Start your day as you would any other. Don't skip meals to save calories for a big meal later; it's my number one pet peeve. Eat a protein-rich first meal so you don't get cravings or overeat later.
- Move your body. Work out earlier in the day, take a walk, plan a family hike or start a dance party while you cook. Move after the big meal too: offer to clean up, go for a walk or put on some music. Movement after a meal helps digestion and prevents the crash we all feel.
- Stay hydrated and limit alcohol. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and can lead to choices you'd rather not make. Try sparkling water with lemon or lime, or have a glass of water between drinks. Warm water with lemon before a meal helps digestion.
- Prepare before you go. Eat a snack with protein and healthy fat an hour before the meal, like a protein smoothie or apple slices with nut butter. Protein and fat curb cravings for sugar and processed carbs, so you won't end the night unbuttoning your pants.
- Stay mindful and enjoy your meal. Be present with the people around you, and chew and enjoy your food. If you slip up, leave the guilt behind; guilt does more damage than the meal. Get back to your routine the next day. What you do consistently matters more than the occasional slip.
Have a lovely holiday season, and cherish the time with your loved ones.
